What are the Standard Furniture Dimensions?

A Woman Measuring Wooden Board For Her Furniture

Whether you’re redesigning your current home or moving into a new one, it’s helpful to understand precisely how much space you have. In addition to measuring your rooms, you should also know how large your furniture and other belongings are.

In this article, we’ve looked at various industry sources to compile a list of standard furniture dimensions for sofas, mattresses, and kitchen tables. If you cannot measure your furniture (or you forgot to do it before you arrived at the furniture shop), you can use the following guidelines as a reference.

Sofas and couches

From modular lounges to sofas to chaises, there are many different types of lounges that you can buy for your home. As a result, it is a bit tricky to provide a set of standard dimensions for a sofa, but we can give you an approximate range.

According to the furniture company Wayfair, tradition-style couches typically have the following dimensions:

  • Length: Usually between 170 and 250 cm, with the most common size being 213 cm
  • Depth: Generally between 80 to 103 cm, with an average of 89 cm
  • Height: Most often between 66 to 91 cm

Beds and mattresses

Luckily, it’s much easier to provide accurate dimensions for mattresses since they’re sold in standard sizes across the country. It’s worth noting that these bed sizes may vary by a centimetre or two, depending on the manufacturer.

Regardless, here’s a basic breakdown of mattress sizes in Australia:

  • Single: 92 cm x 188 cm
  • Long Single/Single XL: 92 cm x 203 cm
  • King Single: 107 cm x 203 cm
  • Double: 138 cm x 188 cm
  • Queen: 153 cm x 203 cm
  • King: 183 cm x 203 cm
  • Super King: 203 cm x 203 cm

Dining tables

Just like sofas, dining tables come in a range of sizes and shapes, so it can be hard to put together standard dimensions. In spite of this, Dimensions.com have some general guidance on the average sizes of these types of tables.

According to the website, most kitchen and dining tables have a height between 71 and 76 cm. However, there’s more variation when we look at the widths of tables:

  • Square table (four people): Usually between 80 and 120 cm
  • Rectangular table (six people): Typically from 150 to 200 cm
  • Circular table: Usually between 80 and 120cm diameter

For the average homeowner, keeping track of these measurements and dimensions can get tricky. And if you’re in the middle of moving house, it becomes just another task to add to your to-do list.
